Good Times with Paint, Pals, and Pubs
Looking for a Unique idea for a Night Out? Get ready to break out your artistic side! It is time to try Paint Nite.
Paint Nite offers you the opportunity to try your hand at painting while also checking out a local hotspot restaurant or pub. All the supplies are provided for you. You just need to bring a positive attitude and let your creative flag fly! Sometimes a few extra cocktails can help with that.
I have to admit- I was skeptical when I heard about Paint Nite. The idea of sitting at a local bar or pub with a bunch of strangers painting a pre-arranged painting didn't sound thrilling to me. Especially since I am an artist. The thought of not painting my own painting with my own brushes was like fingernails on a chalkboard inside my brain. I didn't think I could handle it but I am sure glad I did!
As a surprise for my husband, I got us signed up for a Paint nite. My husband is not artistic at all. I thought this would be a fun low pressure way for him to try out painting. He always says that he doesn't know what to paint or how. I thought Paint Nite would be the perfect solution... For HIM. I honestly thought I would just have to grin and bear it. But in the end- he had a great time and actually enjoyed painting for the first time and I spent the evening in sheer happiness.
The painting I chose was "Bridge Under the Cherry Blossoms". Our location was at Club90 in Sandy. My husband was less than thrilled when we pulled up at the bar. He is not a bar person. His first thought was that I was going to make him Karaoke- which made him instantly nervous. Once we got inside and we sat down in front of a blank canvas in a room full of strangers- he got even more stressed. He had no idea what we were doing and had never heard of Paint Nite. He started nervously joking around with the gal sitting next to him (this was her 5th time) while I inspected the two paint brushes that were provided. I noted that they were a higher quality than I thought they would be. I am very specific when it comes to my art supplies so I was pleasantly surprised.
The event began with the Artist who was hosting giving some simple instructions on the steps we would take to make our painting. Her instructions were easy to follow and peppered with humor. I started to let my guard down and so did my husband. He stopped worrying about not being able to paint and I gave in to the fact that this could actually be fun. I realized that I could still make my painting my own by changing up the colors a bit and by using my own technique.
About 20 minutes into it, I was relishing in my own world of painting- almost completely oblivious to those around me. I did notice however that my husband was having fun painting and chatting with those closest to us. I was in my element and feeling nothing but Joy at being able to paint for the first time in ages. You see, I have little ones at home and being able to sit and paint is not a luxury that I have anymore. So the 2 hours at Paint Nite were magical for me despite all my reservations about it.
When our two hours were up the instructor wandered around and helped people with their paintings and answered questions. I think that is about when I finally looked away from my painting and observed everyone elses. It was amazing how different everyones paintings were. Even though we were all looking at the same painting and following the same instructions- everyones painting was completely different. Everyone put their own spin into it. I can honestly say that I had a blast. Being able to paint without having to worry about anything was truly a gift. I didn't have to think about what to paint, what colors to use, setting up my supplies, my kids interrupting, work, or whatever else I should be doing instead. It was simply time where I could be myself and paint.
I know that most people’s experiences with Paint Nite are probably different than mine. They are probably more social and have a few more drinks. But for me- it was perfect. I got to paint for the shear Joy of Painting. Next time- I will be more social and lighten up from the start. And there will be a next time. My husband had so much fun despite me zoning out into my own world that he bought us two more tickets to another Paint Nite.
So all in all- I highly recommend Paint Nite. It is a fun night out whether you have never painted in your life or whether you are a Pro.
